During the planning phases for a recovery plan, people naturally concentrate on tangible disasters such as fire, break-ins, and natural disasters. Data disasters should also be considered part of a disaster recovery plan.

Disaster Recovery Phases

We maximize the value of contingency planning by establishing recovery plans that consists of the following phases:

Notification / Activation / Preparation: To activate the plan and notify employees of the recovery activities. This will also consist of the preparation and snapshot image of your server.

Recovery: To recovery and resume temporary I.T. operations on alternate hardware if required.

Restoration Phase: To restore I.T. systems processing capabilities to normal operations at the primary location or the new location. The restore phase will consist of server operating system recovery from the original preparation phase and the restoration of data from your backup device.

In many corporate Windows NT/2000 environments, the loss of even a single hour's data may cost many thousands of pounds. Downtime is similarly expensive resulting in lost productivity and lost business.

With traditional backup alone, you run the risk of losing days of downtime in the event of a system failure even though your data is safe. A good disaster recovery plan is designed to limit this downtime and be back operational in hours due to good preparation.
